Hello again lovely people and welcome to another ‘Dose of Whimsy’ instalment. In this monthly post I share all of my whimsical arty play and creative thoughts. 😊
Greetings lovely human,
I hope all is well in your world. I’ve been feeling nostalgic for the past couple of weeks looking through my visual journal and remembering how I was feeling this time last year with a tiny newborn. It’s remarkable how I found so much time to be creative despite my newfound responsibility. Read my ‘Dose of Whimsy’ post from this time last year to see what I mean!
A Dose of Whimsy #10
Hello again lovely people and welcome to another ‘Dose of Whimsy’ instalment. In this monthly post I share all of my whimsical arty play and creative thoughts. 😊Subscribe here if you want this little ‘Dose of Whimsy’ in your mailbox every month.
Yesterday I announced ‘if I don’t draw something now I shall loose a part of my identity’. It turns out that having a 1 year old is a busy business. It’s utterly wonderful and gives me joy that I could never have imagined pre-birth and yet I have no time to just sit and paint. Whenever I try to draw, the countdown is on until my pencil is ripped unceremoniously from my hand!
When she is asleep, I’m often so tired that I’m sleeping too or finding something ‘more important’ to do. Before Nina was born, I deleted Instagram off my phone which was the best decision ever. I was so present in the moment and spent my time being actively creative rather than passively consuming content. About a month ago, I re-uploaded the app and have been enjoying following some excellent creators. Unfortunately, it really is very addictive and I deleted it yesterday after realising that my precious evenings were being stollen by my phone! Last night I found myself in a delightful state of ‘flow’ drawing a cockatoo in my journal, my favourite state of mindfulness.
Have you also been stuck in a state of passive consumption of content? What little creative thing might you do this month?
Cave Carrot
My band (The Norbu Pellets) have released a new single and I’m pretty chuffed with the artwork that I created for it. You can listen and download Cave Carrot for free on Bandcamp.
A Dose of Whimsy Zine
I’m really enjoying the process of creating a new zine every month. In the fast-paced internet world, it’s lovely to send out something tactile and lovely to my ‘Letterbox Legends’. My general paid subscribers will have the option to print a copy themselves at the bottom of this post. You can also purchase this month’s copy and/or the matching mini-print here or subscribe for a year’s worth of whimsy in your letterbox here.
Paid subscribers will receive a high-quality A3 copy of this artwork to print and hang for themselves.

Whimsical Wanderers Club
Excerpt from ‘Plants with Peculiar Names’ by Zinia King
Not much is known about the purple beard orchid as it was first formally documented in 2008 by a man named David Jones. It’s a unique orchid indeed, with its lavish purple ‘beard’.
Next time you’re out and about, look out for purple beard orchid and maybe take some time to sketch it too?
Gift for You
I’ve made something a bit different for my lovely subscribers this month to help with some mid-winter mindfulness. The greyscale bird artworks can be traced over with pen for a ‘reverse colouring’ experience. Let me know how you go, I’d love to see the results.
It would be lovely if you would share my post to someone who you think might need a little dose of whimsy in their mailbox.
You can also always peruse my website which contains my online shop and portfolio. I’m also able to be found on Instagram and Facebook.
With love and a dose of whimsy,
Zinia King
